Rare variety of Garnet in a contrasting Chromite matrix, from the type locality no less! Found in only a handful of locations on earth, it’s no wonder material like this goes for a premium usually. Very unusual to see such material carved into a sphere! When making a sphere, the smallest dimension of the initial piece of rough would be the max limit on the size of the finished sphere. Knowing this, the original piece of rough that went into this piece was far larger, and much of it was lost to the process in order to get the gorgeous sphere you see here… Probably one of the most significant pieces in this week’s auction. I highly recommend it!
